Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to Reed Intermediate School.  We are thrilled you will be attending RIS.  This school was created for Fifth and Sixth graders and named after Superintendent Dr. John Reed, who successfully led our district for many years.  We love our school and are proud it was named after Dr. Reed.

Each Reed Intermediate student is assigned to a homeroom, but they are also part of a cluster.  A cluster is made up of students who work with two teachers.  One teacher will teach math and science and the other teacher will teach reading and writing.  The teachers work together to teach social studies.  This cluster model allows students independence while growing in a supportive, nurturing setting.

Another big part of Reed Intermediate is our commitment to teaching students social/emotional curriculum so that they can grow to be good citizens, supportive classmates, and kind people.  We believe in the core values of Project Adventure that are part of our full values; be here, be safe, be honest, set goals, let go and move on, and care for self and others.  These core values are important to all that we do in and out of the classroom.  It is also our belief to learn from our mistakes and that is why we use restorative practices here so students and staff can grow and learn.  We know that mistakes are part of the growing process.

On a personal note, I started in our district many years ago working as a math para, then a part-time project challenge and advanced math teacher, then a fifth grade math/science teacher, and now an administrator.  This is my 31st year working in education.  I grew up in Cheshire, CT and went to college at Boston College.  I took my first teaching job in Long Beach, CA where I also received my master’s degree at CSULB.  I love California as that is where I met my husband, Mike.  We moved back to Connecticut and got married 32 years ago.  We have one daughter who went to school in Newtown and graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.  She is currently working as an animator in Nashville.  This is my 16th year working at RIS and my 7th as an administrator.  I am honored to be part of the Reed Intermediate staff as I consider them part of my family and friends.  I am looking forward to meeting all of you as the new year starts.  You (students and parents) will be in good hands with the Reed Intermediate staff.
